Ms. O'Connell

Ms. O’Connell’s Fifth Grade Class

Hello Parents and Students,

Hope you all had a great summer break! Now, it’s time to get back to learning! This is my third year teaching at Fillmore Central and I am excited to get to know all of you! I will teach Science and Reading for both section of 5th grade. With my homeroom, I will also be doing Spelling and Action 100.

I have some exciting plans for this year and I hope you all will think so too! We will be using our Chomebooks throughout the year for all our subjects. We will be using a number of websites and apps to help enhance our learning experience, including: Kahoot, SpellingCity, CNN 10, and many more as the year goes on! Feel free to check any of these out on your own to find some information on them before the school starts!

Can’t wait to get started!

I am delighted to be teaching reading this year and I have some exciting plans in store for the year! We will be reading several class novels, such as “Shiloh” and “Ugly”. Throughout the year students will also be participating in literature circles, which are book clubs with their classmates. In language arts students will be writing several papers over the course of the year and giving a couple speeches too.

5th Grade Science

We will begin the year exploring the scientific process and the tools that we will need in order to complete the scientific process. Learning this process will set up for the units we will cover throughout the year including: motion, simple machines, the Earth’s changing surface, energy, ecosystems, and adaptations. We will also be looking at how people work with the Earth and our effect on it.  Each one of us will get an opportunity to be an actual scientist throughout the year.

We will be doing a spelling list most weeks. On shorter weeks (3 days or less), we will not be doing spelling. We will be using the website http://www.spellingcity.com/soconnell102/. On this website, the student will be taking pretests and practicing their words for the week. You can also find all of our spelling lists for the year on the website. We will take our spelling tests Friday mornings.
