Carrie Mathison

7-12 Art Teacher

My Teaching Artist Statement:
I feel as artists we have been given a gift and we are to use and develop this gift. I strive each day to investigate and discover not only my own artistic gift, but also those of others.
I personally find art as a way to capture creation around me. My personal art depicts or uses that of the earth whether this is pottery or landscape paintings. Although this is my personal niche in art, I am not limited to this. As a teacher my goal is to probe each students artistic ability, no matter what level it is at, develop it, challenge it, strengthen their creativity and ultimately have them leave the classroom at the end stronger than when they came in. Yes, I do hope they will leave with stronger technical ability (drawing, shading, blending, etc), but I also hope they will discover something about themselves.
May each student advance in creativity, release fear, trust themselves, gain courage to take risks, experiment, explore, and in the end find their own art style and voice. When each of these things are uncovered, amazing art will result and ultimately these lessons will be taken outside of art into daily lives. All art is to be unique, never finished and ultimately thought provoking.
